SCAM , Still being tried Locally

High Risk Tuesday 28th June 2011
Problem:
A local PCSO received a telephone call from a ‘representative’ of BT, informing him that
he was dis-connecting his BT phone line because of an unpaid bill. He demanded
immediate payment of £31.00 or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
The callers name was requested – he gave the name of John Peacock and had a
strong African accent. The phone number 0800 0800 152 was also provided.
The caller realised that the PCSO did not believe his story, so he offered to
demonstrate that he was from BT. He was asked to hang up and try phoning someone
– the caller would then dis-connect the phone to prevent this.
The phone line was dead with no engaged tone.
Shortly after the caller rang back, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with
BT. He stated that payment was to be made by credit card
The PCSO hung up and dialed 1471 the number was withheld. He also called the
fictitious 0800 number and it was not recognised.
The cutting off of the line is very simple, the caller stays on the line with the mute button
on so that you can’t dial out – but he can hear you trying (This is because the person
who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and
immediately calls back.
Possible Action:
If you receive a similar call, be aware that it is a scam.
Always be wary of cold callers who attempt to obtain your bank details or other
personal information.

To All Penkhull Mums,

This site is a great site for preschool & young children! It has a range of games for the age groups 3-7 in Math’s, English and Art! – The games are beautifully designed and fully interactive. The characters speak aloud, so there are vocal instructions within the site. If you are interested in entertaining your child whilst educating them, you should have a look at http://www.Wackywindows.com – You and your child will really love it! You dont have to Register but,,,,,After registering you receive a score book which tracks and logs all your child’s movements within the site. So I can see visually how well they are doing within each game, subject, the time spent on each game and how many points were awarded etc. Go check it out, you will be delightfully impressed.

IT Wise.

Hi All,
Just to make you all aware of something that has happened to some residents in Penkhull. Don’t be Fooled.

The following SCAM has been tried on one or more of our residents and seems to be doing the rounds at present please be careful:

A Caller from India or Pakistan ‘but could be anywhere’ says they are working on behalf of Microsoft and say your operating system is flagging up a lot of errors and your PC is sluggish, slow to boot and slow connecting to the internet. They take you to your event viewer and low and behold there are thousands of information and error messages with red and yellow error flags which on the face of it looks a bit alarming. They are very convincing as they have your name and your wife’s name as well plus address, telephone number and postcode. When I expressed the view it was a scam I was put onto a supervisor (to give it more credibility I guess) who told me my PC had downloaded corrupt files etc.. Told him the same and that I would refer the matter to my computer shop. He hung up, what a surprise! On a bad day one might well be conned by this, until of course they asked for money! All they want in the end I gather is for you to buy software or a download to sort the non-existing problem out. All computers in the world have loads of messages on their Event Viewer page, just take a look. All your personal information is drawn from the local Voters Register and telephone directory; the wonders of having your data put on the net.

The number was 0253 3639 006. It comes up on Google as a scam.
